aRtificial memento
(2021)
Every time a memory is recalled, aspects of it become reimagined, and reconstructed and it is constantly amended, meaning that the memories you never remember are the most accurate ones. I am trying to portray my experience of recalling a memory through drawings. Then using these digital illustrations, I am exploring how different artificial intelligence can reinterpret and ‘reimagine’ them.
Published E-Book : Torn Together
This multiscreen work explores a way of visualising and mapping these intangible, inaccurate human memories and how Deep Learning AI software can interpret them. Through the use of contoured style digital illustrations, a memory of snorkelling on holiday in Padang Bai, Bali has been captured. Prominent to the memory were colourful reflections dancing along the ripples under the water’s surface and the beams of light reflecting onto the subject, who is depicted in the image. The image is processed by a Deep Learning software called ArtBreeder, in which it recreates and generates a whole new still image. By controlling the genes of the software, 175 images were produced by the algorithm. Through capturing and blending each image, a reinvented artificial memento was created.
The project is also featured in the online exhibition ‘Torn Together’. Curated by the students of Film and Digital Arts, UCA.
